The objective of this project was to prepare two computers for a university class.  One computer needed to have a patched version of Windows XP SP3 and Oracle 11g.  The other computer needed to have an unpatched Windows XP and Oracle 11g installed.  The student was provided a Dell OptiPlex GX280 and a Dell OptiPlex GX270.  The first step was in install the needed drivers and updates for the GX280.  Next the student started installing Oracle 11g and didn’t have enough ram.  In order to resolve this problem the student added more memory to finish up the GX280.  Then, the student started installing windows on the GX270.  This machine also required more memory in order to complete the installations.  Throughout the process the student received an error saying that the local variables were not correct.  He checked the variables and everything appeared to be correct.  He then tried to install everything on a GX520 and he received the same error.  The student resolved this error by using Windows XP SP1a media with Oracle 10g.
