Software Tools for Server Monitoring

The Monitor Sever project entails having to monitor several servers and view statistical information from a virtual machine. The information needed to be reviewed:

Hard disk space
CPU utilization
Memory Utilization
Network flow

The requirements of this project is to find a free software to monitor the servers. The software should have the option to expand our monitoring system in the future, and to set up alarm notifications. The goal of this project is to allow our faculty and students to keep track of the servers and have an immediate notification of problems. The servers required to be monitored are;

WASP, IISDEV, Tomcat, and SQL server.

FreeNAS is an open-source, Linux based freeBSD, network storage operating system. It can be installed on virtually any hardware platform that allows it to share data over a network. I have definitely determined that this class could be just like a real life IT position. You never know how long a project might take, even a simple task. I’ve had some tasks take only a couple of hours, and I worked on one project for 36 hours straight. But I feel that Living Lab is helping to prepare me for what will come in the professional world. The Living Lab experience has helped me better understand my abilities and what I need to work on. I worked with others in a team and also learned to lead others when my project needed help. Living Lab is a great class to gain experience that you can apply to the real world. The small class means there is more one-on-one time with the lab instructor. The Living Lab also lets you get your hands dirty with hardware and not just focus on exams and homework. I can apply what I learned in other classes to real-world scenarios. The Living Lab was a life-changing experience, because this is how I got my first IT job.
