The purpose of this student project was to determine how safe data is on iPads. To analyze this the student determined which tools can be used to compromise data on an iPad, what types of data can be extracted, what the ramifications are, and if there are ways to mitigate these issues. The student then determined that iBackupBot is a publicly available third party tool which is used to perform file extractions and browsing on backups made hypothetically in iTunes. Users are then able to access unencrypted backups that are made on a local machine. The student also discovered that unencrypted backups are selected by default within iTunes and that unencrypted backups can be done outside of the lock screen. Hypothetically this means that someone can bypass the lock screen and access nearly all of the contents on the device.
